Once the homes and farm buildings for American families on the frontier, the hand-hewn log cabins and timber-frame barns were abandoned and forgotten as the families moved on. Many have been covered with siding or expanded with later additions. We locate these gems in their original settings and begin the restoration process so that they can be enjoyed by a new generation. As we search through the Midwest and Mountain States for available buildings, we focus on the cabins that are worthy of rescue. We cannot save every structure we find, only because insects and weather have caused too much damage. We salvage what we cansometimes just a few logsand recycle these materials into other cabins that need them. | |
